Kiwanis club and local merchants join city officials to sponsor a next week clean up paint up and fix up drive in Preston. The city will offer free trash service all day next Wednesday with curbside container collection for residents.
The president endorses National Home Demonstration Week April 28 to May 4. County home demonstration agents and council officers mobilize for meetings and exhibits to promote better homes and communities through sharing homemaking skills and latest home economics research.
Mr. and Mrs. Ted Karten of Logan visit Mr. and Mrs. Phil West for dinner with their two sons Steven and Gary Friday night.
Jim Ward, manager of the Grand Theatre, announces Saturday afternoon matinees for youngsters. The first show starts at 1 30 p m with box office opening at 1 15 p m The program includes six cartoons and a feature picture plus weekly prizes.
A Saturday 4-H tour begins at 10 a.m. from the Franklin County courthouse to review beef and sheep projects. County Agent Daniel Roberts says the event lets members observe peers work and apply lessons at home while Wade Wells from the University of Idaho provides lamb and beef calf feeding guidance to attendees.
West Side students stage a three act comedy Curtain Going Opt Saturday at 8 pm in the Clifton Auditorium The cast includes Karen Balls Irene Bur ess Jerry Johnson Jean Balls Roger Campbell Veda Schwaneveldt Robert Schwartz Ronald Jones and 22 students in total Tickets available at the door.
Jim Ward manager says there will be no bank night next Wednesday at the Grand Theatre. The regular bank night is canceled for one week due to the screening of Oklahoma booked for four days at the venue.
About 250 music students from Eastside School District prepare a free public concert in the high school gym. A sixth grade band of 40, joined by 120 junior high players from Preston Whitney and Franklin, will perform. The combined junior-senior high orchestra of 50 includes strings with woodwinds and brass. The high school band of 55 will play contest numbers and more. The program, directed by John Manning, starts at 8 p.m. with 7:45 arrivals. it lasts 1 hour 15 minutes. No admission charge.
In the sole contest on the municipal ballot Tuesday Mark Hammond defeated Parley Shaffer 171 to 141 to win a city council seat. Mayor Sherwin Webb was unopposed for re election with 269 votes and Councilman Reid Hoggan also faced no opposition with 229 ballots cast.
The Eastside School District sponsors industrial arts exhibits in a former Safeway window starting Saturday this week and running through Monday May 6. Junior and senior high students display plastic wood and leather crafts made in class with Utah Poultry Cooperative donating the display space.
Franklin county wheat growers will decide this Saturday whether to form a county wide wheat organization and affiliate with the Idaho Wheat Growers Association. Meeting at 2 p.m. in the basement room of the Franklin county courthouse under County Agent Hyrum G Johnson.
The Preston Junior Chamber of Commerce announces a national Jaycee road-e-o with a written exam and driving skill tests. Local winner advances to state competition for a chance at $3 000 in scholarships in Washington DC July 25 29. Dan Belnap chairs six sub committees. Assistant county agent Hymne Johnson warns winter wheat regions, especially clay Franklin county, to begin biscuit root control within a week. He recommends 2,4-D applications of two pounds per acre early spring and four pounds per acre on summer fallow to curb this weed before it flourishes, noting it lowers yields if unchecked. Adrian Campbell of Idaho Falls visited over the weekend with relatives Heber C Swainston and family.
Great violinist Rubinoff will appear in Preston Monday evening May 13 at 6 15 p m in the Preston High School auditorium. Sponsored by the Preston Lions Club the concert aims to sell enough tickets to fund the event and honor the artist known for dynamic stage presence and a repertoire spanning his own works and master composers.
Preston high school musicians who earned first division ratings in the fifth district music festival in Preston Friday and Saturday April 12 and 13 are leaving Friday for Burley to attend the two day state music festival. Mr and Mrs Mervin Sharp and family and Mrs LaVeda Sharp and son Howard visited Salt Lake City last weekend with Mr and Mrs Nolan Sharp and family.
Banida 4-H dairy club awarded the Morning Milk herdsman trophy for best uniform display at Franklin County Fair. Hugh Geddes of Banida cited club’s neat stall and timely exhibits. Daniel Roberts notes the award supports ongoing county fair improvements for 1957.
Preston Future Farmers of America wins first place in the South Idaho crops and seeds contest held at Idaho State College on Saturday April 13. The victory makes them permanent owners of the loving cup after their third consecutive win. Contest featured identification of seeds and weeds and judging of alfalfa, white wheat, red wheat, barley and oats led by Idaho State College faculty.
Preston viewers watched S-Set William Carlson, a US Marine, and his wife Carol appear with infant Billy on the TV program It Could Be You broadcast from Hollywood. The surprise appearance followed a Marine buddy arranging the spot. the Carlson family received gifts and an arranged Santa Ana home travel and studio experiences.
