Four-Group Tour Slated for Franklin County 4-H Beef and Sheep Club

A Saturday 4-H tour begins at 10 a.m. from the Franklin County courthouse to review beef and sheep projects. Jim Ward manager says there will be no bank night next Wednesday at the Grand Theatre. The regular bank night is canceled for one week due to the screening of Oklahoma booked for four days at the venue.

Annual Concert by Eastside School Groups Set for May

About 250 music students from Eastside School District prepare a free public concert in the high school gym. A sixth grade band of 40, joined by 120 junior high players from Preston Whitney and Franklin, will perform. The combined junior-senior high orchestra of 50 includes strings with woodwinds and brass. The high school band of 55 will play contest numbers and more. The program, directed by John Manning, starts at 8 p.m. with 7:45 arrivals. it lasts 1 hour 15 minutes. No admission charge.

Hammond Wins City Council Seat In Local Election

In the sole contest on the municipal ballot Tuesday Mark Hammond defeated Parley Shaffer 171 to 141 to win a city council seat. Mayor Sherwin Webb was unopposed for re election with 269 votes and Councilman Reid Hoggan also faced no opposition with 229 ballots cast.

Eastside School Projects Exhibit In Store Window

The Eastside School District sponsors industrial arts exhibits in a former Safeway window starting Saturday this week and running through Monday May 6. Junior and senior high students display plastic wood and leather crafts made in class with Utah Poultry Cooperative donating the display space.

County Agent Urges Quick Action to Control Biscuit Root

Assistant county agent Hymne Johnson warns winter wheat regions, especially clay Franklin county, to begin biscuit root control within a week. He recommends 2,4-D applications of two pounds per acre early spring and four pounds per acre on summer fallow to curb this weed before it flourishes, noting it lowers yields if unchecked. Local Musicians To State Festival

Preston high school musicians who earned first division ratings in the fifth district music festival in Preston Friday and Saturday April 12 and 13 are leaving Friday for Burley to attend the two day state music festival. Preston Future Farmers of America wins first place in the South Idaho crops and seeds contest held at Idaho State College on Saturday April 13. The victory makes them permanent owners of the loving cup after their third consecutive win. Contest featured identification of seeds and weeds and judging of alfalfa, white wheat, red wheat, barley and oats led by Idaho State College faculty.
