Annual Camporee Of Boy Scouts Set May 10 11

Rain or shine the Franklin county district scouts will hold their annual camporee May 10 and 11 on Cub River banks behind the Mapleton ward church. Patrols check in at 4 p m Friday under District Commissioner Melvin Harris. weight limits and campfire program planned by Andrew Shumway and Lloyd Christenser. Fielding Winward says all in outdoors action are welcome.

Local Dairyman To Attend Conclave In Indianapolis

Two Idaho members Alma Choules of Preston and W. W. Brown of Ovid were elected to represent Idaho at the Holstein Friesian Association of America 72nd annual convention in Indianapolis June 4-5. Delegates from 48 states will discuss policy and elect officers for the world’s largest dairy cattle registry, which logged 205,527 new herd registrations and 127,769 transfers last year.

Clair Peterson on Honor List at Arizona State College

Clair W. Peterson of Preston is named to the academic honor list for the first semester ending Jan 25 at Arizona State College Tempe. A freshman in the college of business administration, he has a 3.07 average and is a 1950 Preston High School graduate who served three years in the U S Army.

Motorboat Races Planned at Twin Lakes

Wheat Growers organize Franklin County unit

Friday session in the Franklin county courthouse resulted in the formation of a county wide wheat grower organization. A seven man board was elected to lead the Franklin county group and represent the county at the Idaho Wheat Growers Association meeting in Boise.

Franklin County Urges Boat Owners to Buy Licenses

The Franklin County Fish and Games Assn calls boat owners to obtain annual licenses under Idaho's new law ahead of May 19 Twin Lakes races. Licenses vary by boat length and motor horsepower with a $2.50 minimum. rowboats without motors are exempt. Licenses available at the county assessor and valid statewide.

Five Mile Area Topographic Survey Under Way

Soil Conservation Service officials in Boise conduct a topographic survey of the Five Mile erosion area west of Preston. The wash from Bear River to Dayton and a half mile on each side are included. Three SCS men say the project will take about one month and will inform a control plan for local review.

All teenagers with driving permits or licenses may enter the local road-eo. Local winner advances to the state contest in Moscow on June 23 to reach the national event in Washington D C July 25 29 for a $3000 scholarship. Preston Fire Department responded to a Wednesday afternoon alarm at 3 o'clock to a small bedding fire in an upstairs bedroom of Chester Walton in Second North. Cause undetermined, minimal damage reported.

Water Supply Now Favorable in Five Snow Courses

The Soil Conservation Service reports a favorable water supply outlook for five snow courses in Utah Idaho and the Columbia River Basin as of April 1 1957. Local Boy Hurt In Bike Car Crash In Preston

Richard Merrill eight, son of Mr and Mrs Wayne Merrill of Preston, was struck by an automobile driven by Monte Olsen of the J C Penney Co as he rode south on Fourth West Street Sunday around 5 pm. He remained unconscious briefly and underwent kidney surgery in Salt Lake City. His grandfather said he is showing improvement but remains far from recovered. Local police said no charges were filed.

Eight Utah Power veterans honored at annual club party

Eight veteran employees of Utah Power & Light Co from the Preston area received recognition at the 20th annual Veterans Club party on April 22. The awards named include 35 years for William B. Garrett and F. W. Spillman, 30 years for Robert M. Gordon of Oneida, 25 years for W. W. Hansen and Ray F. Nelson of Preston, and 20 years for Homer C. Herd Floyd C. Robinson of Preston and Hyrum Peterson of Grace.

County Wool Clip Brings High Price

The Franklin county wool clip sold last Thursday to Dewey Gould and Co of Salt Lake City for 56 5 8 cents per pound. This marks the second highest price for Idaho wool pools in 1957. Howard Hall, chairman, said bids were received from five of 17 firms invited. The sale was awarded after review by the wool marketing committee: Hall, David E. Davis, Jerry Meek, George Johnson, and Rex Crane. Growers are urged to shear by May 20 and to keep fleeces clean, tied, bagged, and marked for identification. A $1 fleece advance was paid at sale. checks may be picked up May 25 at the county agent's office.

Porter Completes Training At Fort Knox

Pvt. Mark T. Porter son of George QR Porter Route 3 Preston completed six months of military training April 27 at Fort Knox Kentucky under the reserve forces act program He finishes six weeks of tactical field training and will be eligible to complete his service with a local Army reserve or National Guard unit

Preston High Announces 18th Vocal Contest For Baugh Cup

Preston High School opens its 18th annual vocal contest next Monday at 8 p.m. in the high school auditorium. The Baugh cup trophy honors Horace Baugh and the judging panel includes Prof. Rudy Goransen of Idaho State College. The 90 voice choir will perform 15 minutes of music before finalists compete for the trophy. The free event showcases past winners and supports young vocalists.

Idaho Vandals Top Washington Huskies 9 to 5 in NCAC Baseball

Steve Hinckley pitched seven strong innings to earn the win as the Idaho Vandals beat Washington 9 to 5 in the Northern Division of the Pacific Coast Conference. Hinckley added two RBIs with a single and a triple, while Knute Westergren drove in three on a second inning double as Idaho built an early lead aided by Husky fielding errors.
