George Morris to visit Franklin stake conference

Elder George Q. Morris of the Council of the Twelve Apostles will address the Franklin stake quarterly conference this weekend. Sessions are open to the public at 10 am and 2 pm in the stakehouse with multiple leadership meetings scheduled for Saturday and Sunday evening.

Summer Reading Class Sought by PTA for Grades Four to Six

Parents request a summer school for fourth to sixth graders focusing on reading. The PTA plans to provide a teacher with parents sharing expenses. A planning meeting will be announced by letter. those not receiving one may contact Mrs. Marian Rust.

West Side School District appoints Orlando Merrill as superintendent

Orlando B. Merrill of Maricopa Arizona is chosen to fill the vacancy after Keith Brimhall's resignation. Merrill, with 24 years in Arizona and California education, will assume duties July 1 and has led Maricopa public schools for two years. He is married with four children and active in LDS church and scouting.

Eastside PTAs Reorganize At Joint Meeting

Jefferson PTA hosted a joint meeting in Preston High School auditorium Monday. Pres LaRue Smith opened the program with numbers from the third and fourth grade Tonette band directed by Pauline Palmer and Eda Smith.

Local Soprano Wins Baugh Cup At Preston High

Thirty five words describe Lois Miles a senior and mezzo soprano at Preston High School winning the Baugh Cup in an annual contest begun in 1940 by Worley and now sponsored by Baugh. Judge Dr A I Dittmer picked Miles from 15 vocal students among contenders including Dunn Davis Maughan Larson Bennett Haworth Johnson Larsen Benson Stocks Rawlings Meek Cherrington Winger. Preston High School choir performed its numbers as the 20th presentation.

Fire damages chicken coop at Parley Sears residence

Faulty wiring sparked a Sunday fire at the Parley Sears home on East Oneida. Firefighters arrived at 2 30 PM and contained the blaze in about two hours. Damage was estimated at 200 to 300 dollars.

Two Day Cooking School Planned by Power Company Dealers

A two day cooking school sponsored by Preston electrical appliance dealers and Utah Power and Light Co. will be held at the Franklin county high school auditorium on May 6 and 7. Demonstrations by Evelyn Hansen and Faye Moser start at 2 p.m. each day. Prizes will be awarded by the appliance dealers and the power company in separate drawings for each item.

Scholars urged to apply for March of Dimes health awards

Franklin county chapter of the National Foundation announces upcoming May 1 deadline for March of Dimes four year health scholarships totaling $2,000 per student. Nursing physical therapy occupational therapy medicine and medical social work are eligible fields. High school seniors and upperclass college students are targeted.

Idaho College concert choir announces spring tour dates

The Idaho State College concert choir schedules an eighth annual spring tour from April 27 to 29. They perform at Valley High School Arimo Preston High School and West Side High Dayton before a home program May 3 in ISC Student Union ballroom. Six soloists and a piano trio accompany the choir.

Arbor Day Program at Jefferson School

Jefferson School will hold an Arbor Day program Friday at 2 30 in front of the school. Students will present the program and the third grade will sponsor a tour of the city park with each tree marked and identified. Prominent city members are invited to participate.

Fryer To Attend Institute and Begin Utah High School Post

Russell W. Fryer son of W. J. Fryer of Preston has won a national science foundation award to attend a summer mathematics institute at the University of New Mexico. East Carbon County Utah opens a new high school next fall where he will teach advanced mathematics physics and chemistry.

Reports from Franklin County detail the second annual spring stock show at the fairgrounds with livestock weighing, FFA and 4-H projects, and judging in beef, sheep, and swine. Officers and committee members are listed along with guests at a Garden and Flower club meeting and a lighting talk by Martin of Utah Power & Light.
