Ernest Eberhard Jr announces platform for Preston on financing civic improvements sewage and streets youth programs law enforcement city government and community cooperation. He pledges no commitments to groups and urges refinancing debt to fund projects with long range planning and enhanced services.
Preston area readers will see a new Rawhide feature in The Citizen as part of a Centennial year series by the Chamber of Commerce. Forrest Hill’s pen and vivid images narrate pioneer life from winter quarters to the Salt Lake Valley, with future installments on Page 8 highlighting topics like In Quest of an Empire and Meeting the Sioux.
Richard Hobbs, nine, of Preston, won the local grade school marble contest at the Preston Veterans of Foreign Wars event and earned Franklin County’s delegation to the district marble tourney in Pocatello. He also won a bicycle prize from the Elks club and advances toward the national marble games at Boys Town, Nebraska, June 25 and 26. Bus Harmer, Preston VFW post commander, notes district playoffs at Pocatello lead to a state contest and then the national event.
Ernest Eberhard Jr. and T R Bowden, candidates for Preston mayor in next Tuesday's election, spoke at a Rotary Club program. Eberhard praised Preston, said he turned down higher paying posts to stay, and urged a fair, efficient, progressive approach while noting needed water sewer, parks, and recreation improvements.
Preston city schools teachers will receive raises averaging 430 dollars per teacher, with new contracts approved after a special board meeting and a subsequent session to finalize terms. The increase stems from higher state revenue following recent educational legislation, with minimum and maximum salary levels set at 1700 and 2730 dollars.
The Ladies Posse of the riding group invites the public to a western style dancing social at the courthouse Saturday night at nine. Prizes will be awarded for the best western attire and good music will accompany the dancing.
Preston residents join Lions Club efforts to improve the town with a Clean-Up and Paint-Up program running April 21 to May 1 under the direction of Rulon Dunn. Rotary, Jaycees, scouts, and other groups organize safety, streets, fire inspection, publicity, and school programs with garbage collection slated for April 25 and May 3.
Preston High plans a district league with five defenses including West Side, Downey, Malad and Pocatello. The winner meets the class B league champion for a state tournament berth at Lewiston May 23 and 24. Preston hosts Pocatello Thursday under lights at the city ball park with Supt Harlana Simmons overseeing.
Vaughan Greaves assumes management of the former Dale's Tea and Cream parlor at State and Oneida Streets. The store remains closed for cleaning and redecorating, with a reopening planned in a few days. A public contest seeks a new name, open Friday through Saturday April 26, with a $5 cash prize and candy jar for the winner. The store’s opening date and renovation completion will be announced.
Saturday stake conference events are planned with opening meeting at 6:30 p m and a priesthood leadership gathering at 8 p m. Pres Henry Rawlings notes LeGrand Richards will represent church authorities at the meetings.
Directors of the Preston Riverdale and Mink Creek Canal Company announce spring channel repairs start Monday morning. They seek volunteers to assist in cleanup and contact Arthur Moser or board members. A Monday board meeting approved a 5 percent stock levy to fund spring work and job openings for canal riders or water master.
American Legion Post 34 elected new officers at its annual banquet. Evers was named commander to succeed Kyess. Leon Marshall, first vice commander. John Martin, second vice commander. LeGrande Clatterton, adjutant. DeVar Farnes, sergeant at arms. Duane McQueen, chaplain. Howard John as service officer. Delegates were chosen for the district convention in Blackfoot. Installation is set for May 12.
A drafted letter aims to reach all registered Preston voters this week urging support for Bowden's mayoral candidacy. The missive seeks to inform and persuade the electorate while noting Sowden supporters circulated the mailer.
FE Ww Potnick is named manager of the M H King variety store in Dillon replacing CW Teuscher who served as temporary manager since the store’s purchase. Teuscher returns to Montpelier as assistant manager of the M XH King store. Potnick, a Navy veteran, has led King stores in Dillon for a year and is arranging a Preston housing search as the firm advertises a closeout sale to replace stock.
Lt J Dr Wilson of the Pocatello depot arrived at the high school and presented a 21 inch trophy to the basketball team for its sportsmanship. He praised the team and the student body for upholding an outstanding characteristic observed over three years of district and state tournaments.
