Residents urged to join a city led cleanup week from April 19 offering free rubbish pickup. City officials and civic groups will partner for debris removal near streets and dumps to curb rat populations and disease risk.
Preston High School held try outs for its marching corps last Thursday in the high school gym. New members named include LaDawn Whittle, Diang Palmer, Geral dine Jenkens, Lorraine Bennett, Carelyn Owens, arjorie Robinson, Lorenza Nielsen, Louise Johnson. Officers for next year were Camille Robinson at president Peggy Jo Corbridge secretary Lorraine Bennett reporter and La Rene Peterson property manager.
A national March of Dimes poster campaign aims to boost interest in building a new children’s hospital in Boise Idaho. The effort comes from Elks lodges across the state cooperating to raise funds for the project.
The Easter egg hunt for Preston's small children will be held Saturday April 17 in City Park. Five cases of eggs will be prepared and hidden, with Jaycees assisting. Eggs will be cooked in the cafeteria and hidden in the Bark area.
A Thursday concert at the high school gym featured West Side and district bands from Dayton Clifton Weston prade schools. Selections by combined elementary bands included flute trombone and sax solos. Junior high boys and girls choirs plus high school choirs performed, with 47 junior participants and 44 high school members, totaling many voices and two vocal solos. Refreshments followed, provided by the Parent-Teacher Association.
The obituary lists survivors including three brothers and two sisters Patrick R Jamie Ann Kent and Bradley Hoggan along with grandparents Roy Andréason Pres ton and Willard E Barlow of Salt Lake City. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 11 am in the Preston seventh ward chapel with burial in Preston cemetery.
The Preston chapter hosts over 220 people at Oneida stakehouse for the annual FFA father and son banquet led by Larry Larsen and Edwin Hyde. Dean R H Walker of USAC presented and honored members, including J Neft Boothe with honorary membership and Bud Keller for public speaking. New officers were introduced with Walter Kapp as president Gale Moser vice president Lynn Bennett secretary.
The Preston Citizen apologizes to Banida readers for two weeks of missed deliveries. Papers were delivered to the post office Thursday afternoon and should have reached Banida Friday. a railroad mail clerk reportedly failed to drop the sack, sending papers to Pocatello or farther. The newspaper will work to locate the responsible party and fix the delay.
Orrin Merrill, born August 1876 in Smithfield, died March 7 at Preston 7Marial hospital due to heart ailment. He married Alice Stephenson on November 11 1905 in the Logan LDS temple. He served as bishop in Mapleton and Downey wards, chaired the Downey school board, and led the Preston Mink Creek Canal company for 14 years. In 1920 he joined the Franklin stake high council, later becoming stake patriarch until his death. Survivors include his wife and relatives.
Ethel Beutler daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Beutler Dayton has been named salutatorian for the West High School graduating class of 1954. She served as secretary of the freshmen class and represented girls state. she held roles in the drama club and was part of the student council and poetry clubs. She placed first in the patriotic theme poetry contest last year at the high school.
Principal and coach Dolan Condie leads the Certe basketball players including Bodily Beckstead Morris Begon Russell Petterberg Farrell Eldén Golightly Dean Sharp George Reid Mockle Poole and Lynin in a Friday night game. The squad remained undefeated as they advanced in the tournament.
The Game Association sponsors a spring magpie head drive with prizes of 15, 10, and 5 dollars for the troops collecting the most heads. Entries run April through June 26, culminating in a boys' toast. Magpie bands and heads, valued 2 to 5 dollars, will be tracked by officials, with ongoing efforts to engage local Boy Scout groups and a future campaign by the association.
Fairview residents invited to Arbor Day event at the cemetery Thursday at 1 30 p m. Board member Merlin T Whittle says the plan includes a U shaped edge planting with Norway spruce replacing a center roadway. Students will be divided into groups to plant trees followed by a community picnic with cooperation from Fairview School Marion Jensen and county agent Daniel Roberts.
The Preston city cemetery will plant Siberian elm saplings on Friday April 18 interplanted with green ash and Syringa. Daughters of Cheerful Hope will host a bonfire party after planting and Dr Jerry Weaver will chair. A local forest ranger will demonstrate tree planting techniques for Jefferson School students.
Foss Furniture Co announces a storewide sale to move half the stock including rugs carpets mirrors and furniture. Manager Frank Foss and head adjusters say the event offers real values on quality items as the store closes for marking and rapid discounting tomorrow at nine o clock.
Sergeant Clair Peterson of the 145th Infantry Division earned the Bronze Star for meritorious service in Korea. He joined the paratroopers in January 1951 and later aided eight halftracks and his platoon, earning commendation for leadership and tactical skill. Now residing in Baise, he graduated from Preston Heights High School in 1950 where he was senior class president.
Clair Bosen of Preston elected vice president of the Idaho State Future Farmers of America at the convention held April 1 to 3 in Idaho Falls. He earned the farmer degree for outstanding achievement in swine dairy and crop projects. Walter Knapp presided as president for 1954 55. Gale Moser named new vice president David Orme reporter Stephen Hinckley secretary The Preston group won a silver emblem for its scrapbook. Governor Len Jordan spoke at the convention banquet encouraging agricultural progress.
A meeting last week unanimously nominated Hiehet Robinson as district chairman of the Preston county Boy Scouts of America. He has served as district commissioner for five years overseeing 23 scout units and 18 explorer posts. Nominees include William Waddoups and others. new at large members were named to join the district committee.
Representatives from Preston High placed in the regional fifth district festival held in Idaho Falls. Charolette Owen and Viola Lauritzen scored well in memorized oratory and humorous reading. Nancy Greavis earned a superior rating in poetry reading.
