Mrs Maughan Preston Is Idaho State Mother for Year

Eldora Johnson Maughan of Preston was chosen Idaho state mother over all candidates. Announcement by Idaho Mothers Assn. chairwoman Mrs. Lorenzo Hansen outlined plans for the official presentation and a trip for Mrs. Maughan to New York City for the American mothers event. Finance chairman R S Fulton to lead the drive, with local civic leaders involved. Governor Len Jordan may attend the presentation at a civic award meeting.

David W Beckstead of Preston is among Washington State College Pullman students on the first semester honor roll for 1953 54. President C Clement French congratulates 800 students and families for qualifying for undergraduate honor roll with 50 or more grade points and 76 achieving 64 or more points through A and B grades. Idaho State College Granted Alma Mater Song Use

The University of Idaho states the state chamber of commerce may use Here We Have Idaho, with melody, and will include it in pamphlets for local chambers and schools. Idaho State College also received permission to use the alma mater. The song, written for a 1917 stunt night, is Idaho’s state song.

Reward Offered By Local Firm For Vandalism Action

UPE and L Honor Veterans at Salt Lake Event

Three veteran UP and L employees from the Preston area will be honored at the 17th annual veterans club party in Salt Lake City on April 7. George M. Gadsby, president and chairman, will receive a 25 year pin and be honored for 25 years of service. H B Young will receive a 40 year pin. Wallace E Dunbar Sr and Joseph C Goff will each receive 25 year pins. The UP and L veterans club now has 584 members, about one third of the company workforce.

Franklin resident Milton Woodward dies at 59

Milton Woodward of Franklin died at his family home Sunday after a brief illness. Born December 7, 1894, he was a lifelong Franklin resident and farmer, active LDS member and former missionary. Survived by his wife Erma Lowe, a son Ross, siblings, and ten grandchildren. (Continued on page 4)

Ezra T Benson to Speak in Logan Saturday

Ezra Taft Benson secretary of agriculture in Eisenhower administration will address a large Logan crowd at 2 p.m. Saturday in the USAC fieldhouse. Benson, a Franklin county native born August 4 1899, is a descendant of LDS apostle Ezra Taft Benson and will discuss farm policy of national significance.

Idaho State Choir Schedules Two Area Concerts

Dareth Balls of Dayton joins the Idaho State college touring choir for a five day tour beginning April 5 with 21 concerts in 20 Idaho communities. Performances are at Preston High at 1 p.m. and Dayton High at 2 30 p.m. The 42 voice choir is directed by Prof. Wesley M. Harris.

Mystery farm handwriting leads to owner call at THS Citizen

Snow measurements show deeper depth and higher water content

March snow readings in Emigration Canyon report an average depth of 70.8 inches with 22.1 inches of water, up from last year’s 56.8 inches and 21.3 water. A second measurement near Sharon found about 30 inches depth and 9.3 inches water, comparable to 22 inches and 8.1 water last year.

Tocal Elks Lodge Delivers Mets Installations 1954

Preston Elks Lodge holds installation ceremonies for the new officers of 1954. Outgoing exalted ruler Phil West will preside. Confirmed installs include Clarence II, Ken Drick as exalted ruler Lee Bergquist as leading knight Gene Curtis as royal knight and other officers. Art Workshop For Teachers In Franklin County

An art workshop sponsored by Binney and Smith is being held at Jefferson cafeteria Franklin County for about 40 teachers from Eastside and West Side districts. Miss Beverly Jean Smith directs. she holds a BA from the University of Wyoming MFA from Utah and has taught art in several schools. The program runs five hour sessions over three days using a creative Learn to Do by Doing approach with Crayola chalks paper mache and tempera paints. Supplies are provided by the company.

Cancer Workers Receive Awards Here Friday

Ninety six volunteer cancer workers witnessed the presentation of 14 awards for five years of service to the American Cancer Society at the training school for Franklin county held in Elkshall Friday. The event included remarks by Mrs. Edward Kross and featured a house to house campaign plan for April designated by President Eisenhower and Congress.

Eastside school district 201 in Franklin County endorses an urgent bond issue. Mystery Farm Owner Revealed in Dayton Ward

LDS bishop H Glenn Bingham of Dayton identified as owner of a 100 acre irrigated farm northeast of Dayton last week. The Dayton ward leader, son of Mr and Mrs R Bingham, moved to the farm after buying from Junius Christensen about eleven years ago. He and his family farm beets potatoes hay grain and pasture with 18 cattle and 500 laying hens. Butterfat yields average 422 pounds for first year cows. beets and potatoes are his main profits. He rotates crops and uses manure nitrogen and planned phosphate while applying sprays cultivation and hoeing to control weeds.
