Readings show higher elevations with snowpack greatly improved over last season. Projected runoff this year is earlier and expected to be greater and longer lasting than last April 1 measurement.
Joan of Lorraine, a novel and engaging drama, will be staged at Preston High School auditorium for two performances on April 19 and 21. The production shows the back stage of theatre while retelling Joan of Arc’s story and parallels actors’ and citizens’ challenges today. It features Ingrid Bergman in the title role and has garnered praise as an ingenious and substantial drama.
A pavilion sale is planned for Friday April 13 at 38 p m at the livestock auction company pavilion west of Preston. Co sponsored by the Cache Valley Auction and the Boots and Saddle Special Horse Sale wall. Saddle horses meat horses and other types will be auctioned.
A special priesthood meeting is planned at Oneida Stakehouse at 7 p m. Only Melchizedek and Aaronic priesthood members may attend. women will not be admitted. Attendees include stake readers and priesthood members from Oneida Franklin and Bannock Stakes with other priesthood members welcome.
Captain Jose Baldivieso, Bolivia’s consul and UN delegate, will address the Preston Knife and Fork club Friday April 13. He advocates continental solidarity and notes his dual role as consul in Topeka, educator, and writer with credentials from Ohio Wesleyan and Emporia State.
The Friday evening event in Preston High School auditorium awarded Johnny Bell violin solo trophy to the senior son of Mr and Mrs Theo Bell. Myrna Sparrow and Kimber Webb received medals for outstanding instrumental numbers. The Pack trophy honoring the top soloist was presented by Mr and Mrs Don Pack.
About 32 local FFA members traveled to Pocatello for the state convention starting Thursday. Delegates from the Preston chapter joined other leaders, heard speeches by Lynn Looslie and Rodney Hansen, and Gordon Jensen earned the state farmer degree. Local members returned by 3:30 p.m. Friday while others stayed for the weekend activities including a banquet and dance. New state officers were elected: President Jim Carpenter, Vice President Dwane Jakobson, Secretary John Knudson, Treasurer Carl Williams, Reporter LeRoy Dodson, Sentinel Roy Bron. The Preston chapter also elected new officersJerry Chatterton, Orin Winn, Paul Bennett, Richard Bodily, Vance Hedin, and Karl Ballif.
A luncheon on Wednesday March 28 in Preston cafe formed by the local oil industry information committee named a new year head. Richard Hendricks of Hendricks Chevron station was chosen as chairman to succeed Dell Bosen. Kimber Christensen Glen Carter join the committee with roles in the women’s group and other organization duties.
Preston Elks Lodge members will install new officers including Exalted Ruler Curtis Sbe, Loyal Knight Howard H. Johnson, Esteemed Lecturing Bill Balinen, Secretary J. Smith, Treasurer Deward Mac Gambles, Trustee Gerald Greaves, and installing officer Jordan Warr. Also named are East district deputy and East 1st president of the Idaho State Elks Association.
The Franklin county farmers cooperative announces a total dividend of 30 740 dollars to dairy members. Directors Gene Pasicink Suél Murdock Jake Davies Elroy Smith and Dale Bennett will distribute checks to dairy farmers. Since 1948 the cooperative has accumulated 179 000 for dividend distribution with 62 000 already returned to dairymen.
The 1954 census preliminary report shows Franklin County farmers operating 1 098 farms selling farm products valued at 5 983 799. Crop value 2 742 441. livestock and related products 3 246 358. Dairy 1 520 515. poultry 615 184. other livestock 1100 059.
Marketing Group OUD votes unanimously to establish a 365.02 livestock loan fund for Franklin County 4-H members. A three man committee including Edgar Petterberg Preston B. Win Jr Clifton and Melroy Larsen is named trustee. County agent’s office to receive association’s equipment. fund aimed at helping 4-H youths acquire livestock for projects.
The preliminary census report shows Franklin County service establishments totaling about 424000 dollars in receipts for 1954. The combined yearly payroll reached around 29000 dollars with 38 unincorporated businesses and 43 personal service firms reporting 108000 and 118000 to 200000 dollars in receipts across automotive, personal, professional, and miscellaneous service sectors.
A 1955 Ford Victoria, owned by Boyd Allen of Swan Lake and loaned to Gordon Anderson of Oxford, overturned off the right side of Highway 34 about a mile beyond Praston radio station. Mrs Doris Atkinson of Preston was driving with Allen’s loan, injuring occupants. Sheriff Ray Talbot listed damage at about 1000 dollars.
Franklin County ASC chairman Ven Atkinson warns wheat growers that price support applies only to wheat meeting standards such as freedom from treated grain. Mixing treated seed with loaned wheat makes all wheat ineligible for a loan or milling sale, and may render loan repayments necessary.
Mayor Webb announced a special city purchase of Norway maple trees to be sold to residents at absolute cost of 75 cents per tree. Trees range from four to five feet and will be planted this week in the city spark area. residents may obtain them by contacting Maylon Holtins or SS.
Franklin county residents are urged to prepare for the county fair with junior and open class shows in dairy beef sheep and horticulture. Tentative improvements at the fairgrounds include a new guard building and expanded crowd handling as officials finalize plans for the event.
The Preston branch of First Security Bank will raise its savings interest rate from 2.0 to 2.4 percent, effective April 1. Lloyd Hoggé, a bank official, announced that interest will be paid semiannually on June 30 and December 31 and that other deposit products have also seen increases.
Melvin Alfred Westerberg fifty one year old manager of the Franklin County Poultry Association died Monday afternoon at Preston Hospital after an extended illness. He was born August 5 1904 at Mink Creek Oregon and moved to Preston in 1929. He served as counselor in the Preston second ward bishopric and as Sunday school superintendent. He had been a Franklin stake Sunday school board member for ten years and affiliated with the Preston Lions Club. Surviving are his wife of Preston two daughters and his mother and siblings. Funeral services were held today in the Preston first ward chapel.
Franklin county ASC committee chair Von Re Atkinson explains a 1955 wool program change dividing payments among all owners of wool bearing lambs. The plan affects lamb sellers after March 31 and buyers for feeding or slaughter while keeping the 62 cent wool incentive and national percentage payment unchanged for year ending March 31 1957.
