Morse Hatfield race centers on personalities in Oregon

In Portland observers see a Senate contest between Wayne Morse and Mark Hatfield as a clash of personalities rather than distinct issues. Morse, 71, has shifted from Republican to Independent then Democrat, while Hatfield, 50, a Republican, seeks re election after a long career as governor and senator. Polls show Hatfield leading narrowly with Morse gaining ground as both men defend liberal and conservative records amid Vietnam war debates. The race mirrors Oregon’s split political landscape and ticket splitting among 1.2 million voters, with many undecided.
