Economic indicators dip for second straight month
Washington AP reports the leading economic indicators index fell for October marking a second month of slowdown. Commerce says the index dropped five tenths of a percent, with four of 17 indicators down and five up, led by slower growth in total liquid assets and modest activity in building permits and net business formation.

Calley appeals to Supreme Court over My Lai case

Holiday road deaths rise to 117 in U S
The traffic death toll tops the 100 mark midway through Thanksgiving holiday. At noon EST today AP counted 17 fatalities since 6 p m Wednesday as the counting period runs to midnight Sunday. The National Safety Council expects about 450 to 500 deaths in holiday traffic. Last Thanksgiving AP counted 40 fatalities.

Pair survives 4 days on shark peril raft
Susan Shepherd and Allen Zovar, a Van Nuys couple, were rescued after four days adrift in a rubber life raft off California. Spotted at Santa Cruz Island in the morning, they described being nudged by sharks, drinking urine, and surviving with faith and prayer.

Officer halts car to save five lives in high speed chase
Quick thinking by Harbor Division and Highway Patrol saved at least five lives during a rain soaked chase that damaged five cars on the Harbor Freeway. Mouls, a 2 year old patrolman, steered a car driven by an 8 year old Torrance man into the center divider near El Segunda Boulevard at 1 10 am to avert a crash. Freng, 38, of 23895 S Anza Ave, was booked for assault with a deadly weapon after attempting to run down officers. A routine stop at 11th Street and Pacific Avenue led to a pursuit involving Rex Lucy and multiple units over eight miles in ten minutes. A Los Matlas unlit helicopter warned of a near jam and helped coordinate a staged stop, credited with saving at least five lives. Two passengers in Frengs car were later booked for drunkenness. SAN DIEGO AP A thief opened 108 parking meters stealing $210.
