Violin Return Ends Quest for $60,000 Prize

Violinist Benjamin Picone retrieved his 1781 Guadagnini violin stolen from his car on Oct 3 after a Cobb County man who bought the instrument followed a reader tip. The buyer and his wife refused the reward, saying they only wanted the $200 they paid for it. Picone planned to fund his four children’s education and had insured the instrument for half its value.

Revolt ends in Portugal as loyal forces crush hardline rebels

In Lisbon a pro Communist revolt collapsed as units loyal to President Francisco da Costa Gomes routed rebel troops and established barricades around the city. A leftist military policeman was killed in Lisbon and two Communist trade unionists were shot in Oporto. Remaining rebels included paratroopers and airmen who had seized Montijo air base across the Tagus.

Charleston carriage owners refuse diapered horses edict

In Charleston, Daniel E. Hydrick and other carriage operators refuse to place diapers on horses as city ordinance requires. Hydrick warns of jail for him and his horses, while others say the rule would humiliate them and hurt trade. He cites rivalry with Chamber of Commerce lady guides as a motive.

Snow Plagues Texas Plains and Midwest. Fatalities Reported

Storms blanketed Texas Great Plains and into Illinois and Indiana before Thanksgiving. At least 18 people were killed on icy, snow packed roads across Kansas Missouri and Nebraska with up to 10 inches of snow in parts. Texas fatality cited in an icy crash. Valentine Nebraska recorded 19 below zero. Schools closed across Kansas and Missouri as heavy snow hit Kansas City area. Grace Episcopal church fire in Topeka caused $3 million in damage after roof collapse. Road restrictions on Kansas Turnpike imposed due to snow and ice.

Moscow Buries City Under Heavy Snowstorm

Moscow awoke to its heaviest snow in years as a storm blanketed the city with eight to eleven inches of snow overnight. Highways and streets were largely shrouded, with transit slowed and schools possibly affected as residents braced for continued wintry conditions.

U S considers reopening King assassination probe

Attorney General Edward V. Levi asked top Justice Department officials to review the FBI investigation into Martin Luther King Jr. s death and advise whether the case should be reopened. The review follows testimony about an FBI campaign against King during J Edgar Hoover s tenure. Pottinger and Thornburgh lead the civil rights and criminal divisions respectively.

Ex Trooper Kills Oregon Police Chief in Salem Case

Former state trooper Robert Wampler, 59, Beaver Creek, indicted for murder in the shooting of Oregon State Police Superintendent Holly Holcomb in Salem. He underwent psychiatric exams after defense requests to gauge understanding of the charge and ability to assist in his defense. Judge Val Sloper postponed plea until December 1980 results. Wampler is jailed without bail. He was dismissed from the force 18 years ago amid a trial board finding. Wampler had challenged the dismissal in court and later ran for governor in 1902.
