Jars Replace Light Covers At Lovell Wyoming Airport

Manager Cal Taggart reports donations from across the country fixed lighting covers damaged by vandals. Volunteers sent 18-ounce peanut butter jars from New York Minnesota Connecticut Oklahoma and Utah to fit the lights and keep the system functioning. Pilots accept the makeshift solution as jars are mostly well used.

Father Keeps Pilgrimage Promise To Chimayo Church

Ralph Cabrera a 49 year old San Francisco steelworker walked 150 miles through cold weather to the Chimayo New Mexico church Sanctuario de Chimayo as a Thanksgiving vow for his son Ronald who returned safely from Vietnam after nine and a half months in combat. He faced hunger blistered feet and a missing seven foot cross carved by a priest for Saint Joan of Arc in San Francisco. Cabrera said the journey began after his son was drafted and sent overseas and that his promise was kept when Ronald came back unharmed.

Med Cal 7 Trials Begin Probes Of Medi Cal Theft

California Attorney General staff plan prosecutions of medical industry figures for Medi Cal theft within the next weeks. Deputy Atty. Gen. Charles A. O'Brien said the AG office will handle some cases while others are turned to county district attorneys. The move follows a report claiming up to 8 million dollars yearly cheated from Medi Cal by doctors dentists pharmacists and nursing homes. O'Brien rejected criticism as unfair and politically motivated and noted 200 more public complaints after the report. He cited a dentist who allegedly billed about 140100 Medi Cal for 1967.

Convict Donates 30 Dollars To Needy Family

Dick Kraus a prisoner at Colorado State Penitentiary gave 30 dollars from prison earnings to a Canon City family for Thanksgiving groceries. He earns about 25 cents a day drafting for the prison engineer and makes metal objects sold by a Littleton firm. Warden Patterson praised prisoners for helping others and noted the donation.

Lennon Pleads Guilty In Dope Case In London

John Lennon pleaded guilty to possessing marijuana found by a police dog in his London apartment and was fined 360 dollars. Yoko Ono’s drug charge was dismissed and both denied obstructing officers in an Oct 18 search. Ono wept after court as Lennon left with her. No crowd scenes but they entered via back door to avoid fans. Magistrate praised Lennon as an artist of note on his first offense.

Armored Car Robbers Take $44119 From Sunnyvale Plant

Sunnyvale bandits raided the Lockheed Space and Missile plant for Brinks payroll of $44119. Guard Nick Avtonomoff was shot in the trunk of a car, held for four hours until the burglars escaped in a camper truck they started.

Alvin Karpis to Be Freed After 32 Years in Prison

Alvin Karpis known as Badman of the 30s will be released from prison in January after a 32 year life term for kidnapping conspiracy. Born in Montreal, he was part of the Barker-Karpis gang linked to multiple slayings, captured by Hoover in New Orleans in 1936 and later held at Alcatraz before transfers. The parole board cited age illness and good conduct, with deportation to Canada set and a job guaranteed.

Man Struck and Killed Crossing Harbor Freeway

A bearded barefoot man identified as Robert Reiman about 30 was struck by two to four cars while attempting to dash across Harbor Freeway near 621 W. Rosecrans Ave. He was pronounced dead at Gardena Memorial Hospital as police noted none of the vehicles stopped. Witnesses saw the man approach the plant doorway, scramble over a fence, then run onto the freeway.

Sirhan Asks Trial Delay for Holidays

Defense attorney Russell E. Parsons asks to postpone the trial of Sirhan R. Sirhan, the 24 year old Jordanian accused of killing Senator Robert F. Kennedy, until after Christmas. He sent a letter to Superior Court Judge Herbert V. Walker requesting a continuance until after Jan. 2 and left to the judge a convenient time for a hearing. Parsons expects to be joined by another lawyer and noted a trial date of Dec. 9 remains. Walker said media seats for the trial have been allocated.

Court Orders San Francisco State to Reopen Monday

San Francisco State College faces a Monday reopening order from Marin County Superior Court Judge Joseph G. Wilson. Frederick Craemer, a graphics student, petitioned for the action, citing hoped-for instruction fulfillment. Acting president S. Hayakawa learned of the order as campus life cooled for a holiday. Partying protesters still planned to disrupt and expand a statewide students strike, while former president Robert R. Smith resigned, citing trustees’ limits on restoring peace.
