Breeder reactors hailed as key to future power

San Francisco officials report Chairman Dixy Lee Ray of the AEC told the Atomic Industrial Forum that breeder reactors could be ready to supply commercial electric power by the mid 1980s. The Oak Ridge plant, a $90 million contract, aims to demonstrate the technology and shorten licensing times to five or six years. The program emphasizes fuel efficiency, with safety standards to be developed for full-scale plants, while cautions about accelerating current reactors to meet the energy crisis remain.
