Long Beach teachers seek pay hikes as bargaining stalls
Long Beach educators including the TALB and LEFT presented salary requests for 1977 78 with TALB seeking about 10 percent and LEFT about 8 percent raises. The talks failed on collective bargaining as LBET refused a compromise plan. Proposals also call for raises for daily substitutes and broader fringe benefits while keeping future negotiations open if not agreed otherwise.

Lawyer sworn in as fifth Los Al councilman
Attorney Kenneth Zammick was sworn in Monday as the fifth member of the Los Alamitos City Council and immediately began work. He was the unanimous pick for the vacancy created two months earlier when former Mayor Phillip Cox resigned to join the West Orange County Municipal Court. Zammick showed independence by abstaining on a minor purchasing ordinance amendment, saying he would abstain until he could see the text, as council staff prepared for a second reading. The agenda was largely routine.
