Habitual Burglar Gets Life Term
Dorety Black, a 58 year old Las Vegas ex convict, received a life term in Long Beach Superior Court under California’s Habitual Criminal Act for a November 1967 burglary of the Longhorn restaurant in Bellflower. Prosecutors noted five prior felonies including 1951 and 1961 burglaries. Black must serve nine years before parole eligibility. Two co defendants, Terry McCarter and Richard William Kline, face trial Friday. Police used tear gas to flush Black from the restaurant hideout.

Fire evacuates 2000 students at Northern Illinois University dorms
Fire destroyed a storage room on Grant Towers 10th floor. All 2000 students evacuated without injuries. Sharon Susan Harris, 18, a Rock Island freshman coed, was arrested for arson. Compton Renames Thurgood Marshall High for Dr King
The Compton Board of Education renamed Thurgood Marshall High School to honor Dr Martin Luther King Jr and revealed the new campus will open in September southeast of Central Avenue and Greenleaf Street. Superintendent Carl F Heinz indicated a future school may bear Marshall name. A proposal to name Richland Farms Elementary for King was rejected.
