Ex POWs named for promotion to flag rank
Four American pilots recently released by North Vietnam have been selected for promotion to flag rank. Air Force Cols John Flynn and David Winn were named brigadier generals, while Navy Captains Jeremiah Denton and James Stockdale were chosen for rear admiral. Flynn led the POW camp as U.S. commander. Stockdale was senior Navy prisoner. Promotions were held back during captivity. Flynn and Winn were shot down in 1987 and 1968 respectively, Stockdale and Denton in 1985. The four, part of the Alcatraz gang, were released in February and March and receive ongoing medical care.
