Powell Predicts Civil War Tone In Harlem Sermon
Rev. Adam Clayton Powell returned to Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem after 18 months in self imposed exile and warned of a forthcoming civil war led by black youth against the middle aged power structure. He urged recruiting white youths for the Negro cause and claimed American leadership could become a second class power if progress stalled. Powell spoke amid bodyguards, drawing on crucifix imagery and highlighting his legal troubles and bid for Congress. He called for U.S. withdrawal from Vietnam, framing it as an example of domestic hypocrisy.
