Beavers as currency echo de Gaulle proposal echoes
A Wisconsin lawmaker cites de Gaulle for an international currency using beaver pelts from Wisconsin. Rep Henry S Reuss notes beaver trade historically funded exchange, citing 70,000 beavers at $10 per pelt as a potential steady monetary supply under friendly Wisconsin control. The idea contrasts with gold as a monetary anchor.

Gold Prices Climb as De Gaulle Attacks Dollar and Pound
Paris market prices for gold rose amid reports of Charles de Gaulle planning new attacks on the dollar and pound. A 2.2 pound ingot climbed to 1,237 dollars, with unofficial peak at 39 dollars an ounce as demand surged and supply ran short. Zurich quoted 39.50 to buy and 38.50 to sell per ounce. Observers link De Gaulle’s approach to a clash with Common Market partners, ahead of a Stockholm meeting of ten nations to decide IMF drawing rights and dollar support.

Longshoremen in New York Harbor Enter Fifth Day of Tieup
Longshoremen in the port of New York continued a five day work stoppage as union leader Thomas Gleason warned it is hard to predict when men will return to the docks. A Waterfront Commission spokesman said only workers handling military cargo reported for duty on the New York and New Jersey sides. About 22,000 registered longshoremen saw 70 ships idle while roughly 3,000 demonstrated around the city. The stoppage began Monday in opposition to a plan to hire 50 new longshoremen for automated piers at Port Newark and Port Elizabeth, New Jersey.
