Unemployment Crisis Among Los Angeles Minority Youths
A UCLA Institute study finds 16 to 24 year olds in Watts and East LA facing severe unemployment with 46 percent of Black youths and 30 percent of Chicano youths jobless. It cites street economy pull, lack of career counseling, ineffective programs, and household income needs driving dependence on youth earnings. The report urges expanded counseling, diversified training, and permanent public service employment to channel minority youth into legitimate work.
