New York officer questions Tonkin Gulf torpedo reports
Cmdr Herbert L. Ogier, captain of the Maddox, said in Esquire that muffled sonar noises from the ship’s own rudder may have fooled crews into thinking the Maddox suffered a continuous nighttime torpedo attack. He noted 19 reports likely came from our rudder rather than enemy fire, while Turner Joy sightings and searchlights were also discussed with other officers.
