Court upholds vague obscenity law despite Miller test

The Supreme Court, by a 5 to 4 vote, sustains an Illinois obscenity statute as vague but valid, allowing prosecutions for materials depicting sexual conduct even if not explicitly prohibited. The ruling preserves the Miller framework while upholding Ward’s 1972 conviction for selling obscene publications, with dissents warning it weakens established limits.

ATLANTA AP Doctors push to quit smoking while nurses lag, per CDC study. One in five physicians smoke now versus one in three 12 years ago, with dentists and pharmacists also showing declines. Nurses remain at about 39 percent, reflecting later adoption among women. The report cites limited inhalation and rising female lung cancer risk, and notes CDC, NIH, and WH0 data.
