Baltimore Drops Cleanest waste plant over air standards
Baltimore’s 21 million Waste Disposal Plant was shut down after state health secretary Dr. Neil Solomon denied a permit for failing to meet state and federal air pollution standards. EPA reports show the facility emitted seven times the allowable pollution, and past warnings led to suspensions despite sporadic operation since January 1975. The plant aimed to reduce garbage to a combustible gas for steam and electricity, but equipment failures and pollution concerns halted progress.
