Laird attacks McGovern defense budget plan in TV remarks
Defense Secretary Melvin Laird criticized Senator George McGovern's defense budget ideas as dangerous to U.S. security and negotiations with the Soviet Union. He warned unilateral force reductions and Vietnam withdrawal could jeopardize talks and vowed McGovern would likely modify his positions during the campaign. He dismissed winning the White House with antiwar concessions and said dropping long range missile development would be folly unless the Soviet Union agreed to similar limits.
