Pioneer Kinner engines and famed folding wings noted in era
In the 1920s Binner engines powered civilian planes and training craft with Kinner patenting folding wings later used on carrier Navy aircraft in World War II. A British freighter spotted four people clinging to a cabin cruiser after their launch capsized near Catalina Island. Rescued were Mrs A Alden Safstrom and Doris Pren-Morgast of Los Angeles and Howard Beckwith of Santa Monica, by a pilot and the Sevenpool, with Coast Guard support. The party had left Avalon for San Diego at 6:30 am and the launch, struck by an underwater object, capsized at 11:30. The rescued were taken back to Avalon and plans to tow the capsized craft to harbor were made.
