Crash Kills 7 in Family in Michigan Farm Crash

Seven members of the Collins family from Paragould Arkansas were killed and two in the family critically injured in a head on crash near Copemish Michigan. Survivors include an 11 year old and a 13 year old. Truck driver Warfield Laws of Lake City Michigan was hospitalized.

Airman Faces Court Martial Over White Sidewall Haircut

Airman 3C Don Wheeler of Cortez Colorado faces a summary court martial on charges of disobeying orders after refusing a "white sidewall" haircut demanded by his squad leader. Wheeler, 20, says the order violated Air Force regulations and denies intent to disobey but challenges the haircut directive. An Air Force spokesman noted the case centers on disobedience of a lawful order, with defense challenges delaying proceedings beyond July 15. Wheeler claims harassment by the platoon sergeant and has sought a transfer amid his three years in the Air Force.

Teens in 100 mph crash end wild pursuit to Sunset Beach

Two Los Angeles junior high students, 15 year old Jacob Pustamente and 13 year old Richard Gatica, fled in a stolen car from Colorado Street to Pacific Coast Highway racing through red lights at over 100 mph. The vehicle crashed head on into a parked station wagon at 24th Street and the highway. Both teens were knocked unconscious. Gatica treated for lacerations at Community Hospital, Pustamente unharmed. They were booked in Juvenile Bureau for grand theft auto. The station wagon owner is Don L Robertson of Hermosa Beach.

Puff Race Planes Off for Philadelphia in Powder Puff Derby

The 11th annual women’s transcontinental air race began with the first plane taking off at 9 am from San Carlos toward Philadelphia. Pilot Aileen Saunders of San Diego led co-pilot Darline Sanders of Lemon Grove. 48 entrants followed as skies cleared after sprinkles. Francis Bera of Inglewood, last year’s winner, flies with Edna Bower of Long Beach. handicaps range 65 to 325 horsepower. The 2,567 mile event includes grandmothers like Nina Stoehr, 66, of Pasadena, among 94 pilots. The first refueling stop was Rena, and the race ends Tuesday with no instrument flying at night.

Smelly Loot Recovered From New York Garbage

Francisco Lopez recovered $1,550 left in a paper bag when he stash it in a garbage can at his Spanish American grocery before a holiday. The bag ended up with a garbage collector and later, after a two hour police led search of three tons of refuse, was found shattered but containing $100 in change. Lopez, shaken, vows to avoid garbage cans in the future.
