Spark Sets Off $450,000 Blaze at L. B. Oil Well
An oil well east of Long Beach blew in early today igniting a fire that rose 200 feet, causing about 450000 dollars in damage. Tidewater Associated Oil Co. reported the well in the Woacre field 200 yards east of Pacific Coast Highway near Seal Beach blew at 5,900 feet. Five drillers escaped unharmed as fire crews from four county and two Long Beach companies fought the blaze. The steel derrick melted and the heat sent flames around the base of the well. Traffic on Pacific Coast Highway clogged with about 4000 cars at peak as authorities worked to control the scene and plug nearby wells.
