Hughes denounces autobiography as fake and plans return to Las Vegas
In an on the record session Hughes alleges McGraw Hill and Time Life planned a bogus autobiography with novelist Clifford Irving. He denies knowledge of the project, questions the manuscript’s funding trail, and says he may resume managing his Las Vegas gambling empire while leaving medical research in his estate. He confirms good health and rejects ongoing seclusion.

California's 1972-73 budget rises with welfare and Medi Cal savings
The new state budget, the largest in history, relies on welfare and Medi-Cal reforms to lower next year's costs while maintaining funding for schools. It projects Cal Med total at 631 million, a nine percent rise, and notes welfare costs would have climbed without reform. Savings enable higher support for public schools and teacher retirement funding as lawmakers anticipate 1972-73 finances and legal constraints on school financing.

McCloskey Will Quit Presidential Bid Over New Hampshire Vote
California congressman McCloskey warned he will withdraw from the 1972 Republican race if he fails to exceed 15 to 20 percent in the New Hampshire primary on March 7. He cited opposition to Nixon’s Vietnam policy and what he calls administration deception as his reasons. Fellow challenger John Ashbrook said he will compete in other primaries including Florida regardless of New Hampshire results.

Arson blamed for large Los Angeles printing blaze
Los Angeles authorities say a Sunday fire caused about 100000 dollars in damage and was apparently set to target a printing plant that served antiwar and radical groups. Firefighters worked over an hour to control the fire that also destroyed an electronics firm and a law office. The Peace Press printing shop was owned by Jeremy Palmer, a late 1960s antiwar movement reader who started the firm to provide cheap printing for antiwar and radical groups.
