Pay Board faces hard line on longshoremen raise
The Pay Board may not easily reject a 10 percent wage hike for longshoremen while it refused a 12 percent rise for aerospace workers. Labor sources say the board fears dock shutdowns, and that aerospace workers argue the industry is weak. A three-year ILA pact seeks a 982.6 percent rise for 45,000 dock workers from Maine to Virginia, while West Coast dock workers reject a larger first-year increase. In Price Commission actions, insurance premiums’ profit portions are limited to 2.5 percent annual growth, shifting focus to investment profits.
