Boy abducted as Panthers clash in Los Angeles

A year-old boy, Chico Powler, was abducted from his family car in south-central Los Angeles while his father Roosevelt Fowler wrestled with members of the Black Panther Party. Chico was returned unharmed about 24 hours later after an anonymous tip led police to a park near First Street and Avalon Boulevard. John William Washington, 24, surrendered to a Municipal Court judge and denied involvement. Russell Eugene Washington, 20, remained at large.
