J Robert Jones, Ku Klux Klan leader from North Carolina, left Danbury prison vowing to return south of the Ma pon Dixon Line. He had served a year for contempt of Congress after defying House Un American Activities Committee questions. He entered last March and received two months off for good behavior.
UPI reports American infantrymen protected by gas masks fought North Vietnamese troops on Black Virgin Mountain near the Cambodian border. After 10 hours of combat the Vietcong were repelled with 62 killed, two Americans died, six wounded, and two American helicopters were lost. Additional clashes and shelling were reported across Vietnam.
SAIGON Two military newscasters accused the U S command of censorship and were reassigned within AFVN Saigon. Army Spec. 5 Hubert E Lawrence 27 of Atlanta Ga becomes a chaplain s aide and Marine Cpl Thomas T Sinkovitz 21 of Harrisburg Pa is assigned to the 1st Marine all naval gunfire liaison company. The duration of their new posts is to be determined while the command investigates the case. Five AFVN Saigon newscasters have been moved or removed from air in recent months over censorship protests. Lawrence may face a court martial for disrespect to a superior and disobeying an order. The incident occurred five days before the censorship charges.
Richard Pittman a 24 year old Congressional Medal of Honor recipient from Stockton re enlisted in the Marine Corps after 22 months of failed attempts to gain employment as a policeman. He had sought posts with the San Joaquin County sheriff California Highway Patrol and several city departments while holding various jobs. Pittman said his childhood era defect hindered police entry though he served bravely in combat. He was sworn in in Stockton and ordered to Parris Island. He previously earned the Medal of Honor from actions on July 24 1966 in Vietnam.
President Nguyen Van Thieu stated that South Vietnam will require American combat troops beyond 1970 to defend remaining U.S. support units and assist Saigon forces, contrasting with U.S. hopes to withdraw all combat troops by year end. He cited insufficient South Vietnamese forces and risk to bases if withdrawal occurs. He described plans with U.S. agencies and called for funding and material aid to boost morale and life conditions for soldiers and families.
Space Center Houston officials said postponing Apollo 13 from March 12 to April 11 and shifting Apollo 14 to later in the year is a budget move and a victory for lunar science.
