A Santa Clara County youth, 18 year old Jesse Roy Hill, was stabbed to death at a dance held at the Clara County fairgrounds in San Jose early Sunday. Police reported the incident occurred on the dance floor with no further details available.
Treasury Secretary George P. Shultz urged Congress to tax windfall petroleum profits heavily and cut foreign oil firm tax breaks. He proposed a temporary windfall levy up to 85 percent over five years, fading over time, and said price rollbacks are not a reasonable alternative. He also suggested ending the 22 percent depletion allowance for foreign production and crediting only part of foreign taxes against U.S. taxes. Conferees opened an unprecedented public session to resolve emergency energy legislation, including a rollback proposal linked to trucker strikes.
