Ex-inmates win prison damage suit in Richmond
A federal judge ordered Virginia's corrections chief to pay 21265 to three former prisoners for cruel and unusual punishment at the state penitentiary in Richmond. Judge Robert R. Merhige Jr cited bread and water diets, tear gas, solitary confinement, naked cell exposure, and chaining as violations. Damages went to Landman 15303, Histon 3605, and Wansley 2357, with earlier reforms spurred by the case.
