Two Milwaukee Officers Killed in Arrest Shootout

Two uniformed Milwaukee patrolmen Gerald Hempe aged 31 and Charles Smith aged 24 were shot to death after radioing for help while attempting to arrest suspects on North Palmer Street. Four suspects were arrested, including a man found in handcuffs. authorities consider murder warrants for up to two arrestees.

U.S. Casualty Totals Through Indochina War End

The U S Command released weekly casualty summaries listing 45 941 American service members killed in action in Indochina from Jan 1 1961 to the start of a ceasefire last Sunday. It also tallied 300 635 wounded and 8 805 deaths from nonhostile causes with 10805 set as missing or captured. Four Americans were killed in action last week while 13 were wounded and four were missing or captured after the truce began.

Laos POW List From Communists Hints at New Names

The United States received a Communist list of American POWs held in Laos, previously omitted from Vietnam war tallies. Reds overwhelm South Vietnamese Marines near DMZ

North Vietnamese troops wiped out an understrength South Vietnamese Marine battalion trapped ten miles below the DMZ and overran 200 paratroopers twelve miles south near Quang Tri. The entire marine force of about 100 men at the Cua Viet delta base was destroyed amid shelling and ground attacks. A 1000-man NVA force crossed the Thach Han River near Quang Tri City and overran the paratroopers. Quang Tri faced direct military threat as cease fire slowly took hold amid continued fighting in the Mekong Delta and Quang Tri area.
