Co op astronomers chase bold dream on Monterey peak
Bruce Weaver leads a small cooperative of graduate students and mentors who built a cutting edge telescope project at Monterey. They borrowed a mirror from Princeton, secured a $76,000 grant, and gathered donated equipment and services from Lick Observatory and others to create a modern observatory with computerized control and detectors on Chews Ridge.

Monterey astronomers form self run research group
A small group of United States astronomers led by Weaver and Dr. Albert Melville formed the Monterey Institute for Research in Astronomy after six two year efforts. They pooled resources to live frugally and work odd jobs to fund astronomy, establishing a telescope site on Chews Ridge in the Los Padres National Forest and creating a mail order book service, GMATbooks, to support their venture.

Divisions and Donations Propel Early Astronomical Efforts
Divisions arise but not feuds as thrift and hustle drive a project. The Dream team pursues its aim with help from Dr. William Bidelman, director at Case Western, whose first cash gift supports the plan. A 1872 American Astronomical Society meeting endorsements spark further gifts and grants, enabling unusual funding.
