Energy negotiators seek gas bill votes
A handful of House Senate energy negotiators pressed for support of a natural gas compromise aimed at reviving President Carter's stalled energy plan before year’s end. The plan would keep federal price controls on natural gas but allow prices to rise more than double over six years. Senate mediators Johnston and Ford worked to break a deadlock among 18 conference members, with a full committee vote possible as soon as Thursday. Henry Jackson has opposed the plan as too favorable to oil and gas interests.
