Carter Seeks Broad Tax Cuts Despite Social Security Hike
President Carter outlined a plan to cut taxes for all taxpayers as part of a broader economic package while Social Security tax increases take effect. He pledged a progressive, simplified system with $20 to $30 billion in relief for individuals and businesses, despite funding the Social Security refinements absorbing higher costs through 1987. He emphasized tax reductions in 1980 while defending the Social Security changes as a protected pact between workers and employers.
