Smallpox Declared Eradicated After Long Global Fight
The variola major virus is now probably extinct with remaining samples secured in laboratories. Variola minor had rare recent Somali cases but none now. Led by Henderson of Johns Hopkins, WHO credits eradication to a 1967 push and tracking cases across Bhola, Mogadishu, and other sites. The last known case was in 197% and the last death a Somali child in October.
