Senate fans press for two more B 1 bombers

Washington AP Senate supporters of the B-1 bomber launched a drive to win approval for production of a fifth and sixth planes at 462 million. The House greenlit the step last Tuesday though the Senate had rejected the funding before. Senator Hayakawa led the push and circulated a letter among colleagues with support from Alan Cranston and others. The plan would keep workers at the North American Rockwell plant in Southern California busy and would use the B-1 as a potential bargaining chip in SALT talks, with Garn noting a combat fleet would need 180 aircraft.
