Amnesty means little to deserter in Canada
MAPLE, B C AP Larry Ruble fled the United States to Canada in 1963 to avoid Vietnam service. He worked in a bicycle shop earning 200 a month, later opening an oven shop in Maple Ridge near Vancouver. He will become a Canadian citizen in about three months and says amnesty offers little appeal, as most expatriates would not accept a term of alternative service. He notes some expatriates fail in Canada, returning to the United States, while he feels settled with his new life and family.
