Commodore Vanderbilt and the value of education at West Point
The piece discusses Commodore Vanderbilt's wealth and his son’s education at West Point, noting the prize of graduating among the five distinguished cadets and the moral lessons on wealth, marriage, and education. It also recounts a Worcester/Oxford anecdote about a prank involving a bell rope and a joke on Dr. Gower, and ends with a US election tale of two Genoa men backing Lincoln and Douglas. It closes with agricultural advice from E. O. Bundy on fall potato planting and care with straw mulch.
