A Scene on a Southern Plantation of Cruel Whipping
A long extract from Olmstead’s travel book depicts brutal slave discipline on a Southern estate. An overseer repeatedly flogges a young enslaved girl, forcing her to strip and endure severe blows while bystanders, including a visiting gentleman, react with detached indifference. The narrator recounts the overseer’s calm brutality and quotes a slave’s and others’ remarks on bondage and punishment.
