Italian Airline Suffers Own Unique Problems

Rome AP reports Italy's Alitalia faces grounding amid union disputes and government uncertainty. With 56 global destinations, daily flight cuts average 20 percent causing about $2.1 million in losses. 24 of 82 jets up for sale as cost cuts and service reductions are planned. The government license expires and is not renewed, leaving operations provisional and hampering long term planning. The carrier employs 17,000, serves six million passengers yearly, and battles rival unions and a high political influence federation.
