Olivia-Port Altos Fifteenth Annual Barbecue Draws 2000

About 2000 served at the Olivia Community Center in a record crowd for the Fifteenth Annual Barbeque. Indianola Trail Riders with 60 horses joined from Point Comfort to Olivia led by Jake Mobley and Jimmy Payne. Proceeds aid the Olivia-Port Alto Fire Department scholarship fund and equipment, with final tallies available later in the week.

City Council Agenda Sets Budget and Carnival Permit

The Port Lavaca City Council planned to review the proposed fiscal year budget and set a public hearing time tonight at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall Annex. Also on the 14 item agenda is a carnival permit request by United Citizens League for Sept. 16 17 and 18 at the Port Lavaca Fishing Pier park.

Rome Bandits Hit Labor Ministry for Half Million Haul

In downtown Rome three bandits armed with submachine guns raided the Labor Ministry accounting office on payday, seizing 464 million lire (about $556,800). They used a tear gas blast, detained staff, cut phone wires, and fled in a waiting car. An hour later another trio robbed a nearby post office of 130 million lire (about $156,000).

Point Comfort to Hear Rate Increase Report

The Citizens Advisory Committee on the General Telephone Co rate rise will present its recommendations at the Point Comfort Board of Aldermen meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the city office. W. L. Schmidt will present the committee report. Also on the agenda are repairs to the city maintainer and animal complaints within city limits.

Audit Reveals Missing Funds At Calhoun County Fair

Calhoun County commissioners reviewed an audit by James Houlihan showing about 5 000 dollars in fair funds, 332 dollars in un deposited booth rental checks, 270 dollars from rodeo unaccounted for, and 190 dollars owed to a producer. The Fair Association president Charles Ward requested annual audits and turnover by Nov 15. The board approved Steve Krenek as assistant county agent and Eskew’s resignation as justice of the peace, with duties to shift to Precinct 2. Ward praised county cooperation and noted efforts to strengthen finances. The county judge emphasized the funds are Fair Association funds. A 1977 budget session, a Sept 1 public hearing, and land deed and Maxwell Ditch erosion plans were also discussed.

Probation Ends for Mutscher in Brenham County Judge Vote

Former Texas House Speaker Gus Mutscher, jailed over a 1972 bribery conspiracy, was released early from five years of probation and poised to become Washington County judge after Brenham District Judge J Neal Daniel signed the order. Prosecutors offered no objection per policy. Mutscher has repaid much of his debts and continues regular payments as his appointment awaited.

White House intruder’s motive puzzles officials

Washington authorities say they are puzzled by why cab driver Chester M. Plummer, 30, scaled the White House fence and threatened a guard with a three-foot pipe before being fatally shot. Cub Scout Olympic Winners Named in Point Comfort Meet

In Indianola District Cub Scouts Swim Meet and Olympics in Point Comfort, 18 participants competed. Winners by age included nine-year-old Dwayne Skow for the softball throw, with ten-year-olds Silver Garza Michael Morris and Scott Skelton leading. eight-year-olds had no eligible participants from previous packs.
