Valley Council Sea Scouts Set Weeklong Port Isabel Cruise
Valley Council Sea Scouts plan a weeklong cruise from Port Isabel starting Sunday morning and returning Saturday, June 4. Fourteen Port Isabel boys will participate with Ship 56 led by Leo Baumfeler aboard the Nancy Jane power boat loaned by Colonel Lons. Total crew includes 52 Sea Scouts and eight adults aboard thirteen vessels from five towns.

Cameron County Parks Director Al McGehee reports traffic on the Padre Beach to Port Isabel causeway, opened February 1954, rising sharply with 9,759 vehicles in March and 10,613 in April, up 29 and 27 percent from the previous year respectively. By spring, 141,378 cars had crossed the $2,750,000 link.

First Modern Motel Construction To Start In Padre Beach Development
John L. Tompkins announces the start of a 20 unit motel and patio restaurant facing the Gulf of Mexico at Padre Beach on Padre Island. The project, to be built by Ralph Copeland and Robert Boswell from Mission, will begin with four units and the restaurant. Estimated cost ranges from 75 000 to 100 000 dollars. Ground breaking to occur in two or three days, with plans for a multi million dollar expansion of hotels motels and stores. Tompkins also outlines a larger land improvement program including dredging a channel and wetland work along Laguna Madre.

Los Fresnos Lions Club Horse Show Sets June Dates
The fourth annual Los Fresnos Lions Club Horse Show will be held Friday and Saturday, June 17 and 18, at Sunset Park in Los Fresnos. Proceeds go to the Crippled Children's fund. Horses entered from the Valley and distant cities Dallas Houston Fort Worth and Baton Rouge. Various classes will award ribbons in each division.

Navy Air Base Substation Planned on Coast Near Port Isabel
Washington approved a $5,554,000 plan to acquire land and build a Navy jet training substation between Port Isabel and Rio Hondo. The site previously served as Laguna Harlingen airfield and Port Isabel airport property includes crumbling buildings and warped runways. Engineers surveyed soil samples as Rep. Kilgore said old structures would be razed and longer runways constructed. a defense radar station may accompany the base.

Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce directors and residents labored through the night to install a salt water pump on spoil banks south of Port Isabel. A V 8 engine replaced a too small 15 hp motor, with water district loaning the diesel pump and CPL supplying power. The crew aimed to deepen the channel for continuous operation after a late start.
