Rotary Ladies Night Hosts Lions Club Event
The Port Isabel Rotary Club hosted the Port Isabel Lions at a joint ladies night banquet. Guest speaker Tom Mitchell, president of the Gulf Coast Expressway Association, spoke on building a modern expressway from Houston to Brownsville and linking it to the federal system. Ocie Pockrus was master of ceremonies. The Junior High quintet sang patriotic tunes with Miss Mary Jo Mendoza at the piano. D. L. Pruitt, attendance chair, nicknamed Davy Crockett for securing 15 weeks of perfect attendance, received a coonskin cap.

Armed Forces Day Open House Planned at Harlingen AFB
Final plans for the Armed Forces Day Open House at Harlingen Air Force Base on Saturday May 21 were announced by Major Ohlemacher. Seven fly overs will highlight displays of electronics equipment weather gear and armaments with units from San Benito Brownsville Harlingen Mercedes Elsa Raymondville and Port Isabel participating. A 3 25 p m parade and review of the Aviation Cadet Corp will close the day along with continuous films and a T 29 engine change display. Twelve aircraft including a helicopter and an army observation plane will be open for public inspection.

Rose Cup Award Missed by Narrow Margin
The Port Isabel area narrowly missped the Julia Montgomery Rose Cup by 0.8 point, with Harlingen winning. Alma Ruth Burns Fire Destroys Boat at Port Isabel
The Alma Ruth, owned by Roy Byrd of Port Isabel, caught fire about 2:30 AM and suffered major damage. Firemen report the forward section gutted and the origin of the blaze not yet determined. The boat docked near Roy's Boat Service, slated for repairs.
