Shoemaker Wins Fifth Annual Brownsville Golf Tourney

Jay Shoemaker of Brownsville defeated Buddy Hall 2 and 1 in the championship flight to win the fifth annual Brownsville Country Club Golf Tournament held Monday despite threatening showers. Earlier Shoemaker beat Joe Cardenas 6 and 5, while Hall beat Dick Chapman 3 to 2. Other results include Gene Silver and Jake Trice taking two other flight titles and numerous consolation matches across six flights.

La Grange Seniors Tour Port Isabel Highlights

Forty one La Grange High School seniors spent two days visiting Port Isabel as part of their annual trip. They enjoyed a boat ride on charter vessels, attended a dance at the Firemen's Community Hall sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, and spent time swimming on Padre Island.

Local Lions Honor Worthy Citizen

The Port Isabel Lions club named Cele donio Gonzales worthy citizen of the week. At 72, he has lived in Port Isabel for 55 years and worked for the city ten years keeping curbs and gutters clear. Interpreter Tidefonso Silguero attended, as four Lions volunteered to shovel dirt to raise a dike on the dust flats near the spillway.

Firemen's Week Set in Texas with Dallas Convention

Governor Allan Shivers designates June 12 to 18 as Firemen's Week in Texas. The 79th annual convention of the State Firemen's and Fire Marshal's Association will be held in Dallas at the Baker Hotel June 14 15 and 16. Valley firemen are expected to attend.

County duo reach accord on road bond petitions despite feud

Cameron County commissioners and Judge Dancy agreed to meet June 9 to receive petitions seeking a 6.75 million dollar road bond election. The petitions circulated in Los Fresnos Port Isabel and Rio Hondo as the feud between the judge and commissioners continued. A board of appraisers for right of way payments was named for the freeway and rural rail extension program.

Mrs Battey Die in Corpus Christi After Long Widowhood

Mrs Bertha LeEllen Battey mother of Mrs E W Heinze Jr of Port Isabel died in Corpus Christi where she had resided since 1933. She belonged to First Baptist Church and was a charter member and past Noble Grand of Wildey Rebekah Lodge No 95 and past president of LAPM Canton No 12. She is survived by Arthur Battey her husband, Douglas F Battey her son, Mrs Heinze her daughter, four brothers two sisters five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Bay of Surf Fishing Report Highlights Anglers Reel Trout Counts

Bay fishing shows numerous anglers from Houston Brownsville Harlingen and Edinburg posting trout catches ranging from 12 to 60 fish. Notable totals include W R Shuman 20 trout E V Smith 35 trout and L C Sheppard 60 trout with several parties reporting redfish croaker and snapper in mixed outings aboard vessels TEXAS JOY and LIZZIE BEE. The report runs May 29 to June 1 with multiple communities represented.
