Contracts Set For Park Facilities On Padre Island

E. J. Waitman was awarded a $50,455 contract by Cameron County park board for overnight shelters cabanas picnic areas and parking facilities at Isla Blanca park Padre Island. Adams Brothers of Brownsville received a $17,500 contract to build a restraining wall with a concrete base extending 3 100 feet to prevent sand encroachment. The Waitman project includes two double cabanas eight single shelters and a picnic area.

Cookie Sale Brings Port Isabel Area Goodwill and Funds

Appreciation was expressed this week to the Girl Scouts parents and friends of Port Isabel Bayside and Laguna Vista for their help in the cookie sale. About $300 worth of cookies were sold with $30 left in local troop treasuries. Most profits will aid Camp Lula Sams upkeep and improvements. Mr and Mrs J W Brown returned Sunday evening from a business trip to San Antonio.

Valley C of C fund reaches $100000 toward 250000 goal

John C. Jones announces the Valley Chamber of Commerce special solicitations committee has reached the $100,000 mark toward a four year campaign with a May 25 deadline. Local vice chairs report progress as leaders like Lon C. Hill and Ed Landreth back the plan to fund a Valley wide chamber. The board approves goals including water supply, advertising, attracting residents and tourists, and industrial development.

Contention Over Anzalduas Dam Lands And Delayed Appropriation

Cameron county officials report no active condemnation suits over the Anzalduas dam. Governor Shivers and landowners faced withdrawn suits, with Cameron county owning 131 acres for the dam site on the Rio Grande in Hidalgo county. About 7 800 acres are needed for flood control works and the temporary Mexican dam at Anzalduas remains in use pending a permanent structure.

Senior Girls Visit DVMH Open House

Port Isabel High School senior girls toured Dolly Vinsant Memorial Hospital in San Benito on Thursday. Students received a guided tour and nursing duties briefing to learn why and wherefores of hospital operation and to encourage nursing as a career.

VFW District Meet Set for McAllen May 14 15

Rio Post No 2369 VFW and its auxiliary host the 18th District encampment in McAllen with headquarters at the VFW club. Delegates register Saturday with a ladies swim party 3 00 to 5 00 at Frontier Flamingo hotel pool and evening dancing. Port Isabel April Tonnage Report Shows Freight Movement

A total of 45,146.39 tons of freight moved through the port of Port Isabel in April. Cargo was handled by five ships, six tugs and 11 barges. There were 997 tons of dry cargo and 45,149 tons of petrolean products. Shrimp and fresh fish brought in thousands of tons but are not included in the tonnage figures.

Graduation roundups and optimistic note from Port Isabel

Port Isabel plans graduation events for Junior High and Elementary pupils next Friday evening and Port Isabel High School seniors on the following Wednesday. The PRESS will publish a Graduation edition with senior stories and photos including transitions from junior high to high school. The issue features a reader letter to Shrimp Tales author Betty Weisenhaus and notes from the Police Blotter. Brad H. Smith urged Valley cooperation for a brighter future at a Chamber banquet. Thousands travel to Corpus Christi for Buccaneer Days May 13 15 with a 6 30 p m stadium show featuring drill teams from Texas A I College Kingsville Texas UT Austin UT Houston baton twirlers led by Libby Mullenix the Melody Maids Gloria Hunt Juanita Ward Evelyn Stein and Willard Potts performing sheepdog herding act. The parade also passes the stadium as part of the three day events.
