Pvt Galvan of Port Isabel Texas participates with the 4th Marine Regiment in evaluating a new bayonet system designed to teach following the rules and proper movement. The testing occurs at the Marine Corps Air Station and at Parrallel recruit depot as final recommendations are prepared for adoption.
Mr and Mrs E W Edwards are visiting Mrs Donia Oliver in San Saba this week. They were to depart Sunday and expect to return this weekend.
About 18 boys from Troop 87 of Port Isabel prepare to depart Sunday for Camp Perry at Tip o Tex for a summer camp. Some 160 Scouts from the lower tip of Texas expected to join activities. Accompanying the group are Bill Por and Rodney Grayson as Scoutmaster and assistant. Return to Port Isabel Saturday June 25 about 2 p.m. Visitors night Thursday invites all parents to visit in Rio Hands camp.
Mrs Brook Stone and her son 7andy visited Mr and Mrs Floyd Bobbitt on Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Marty Krus of Dallas visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Brows during the week, according to local society notes.
The Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce held a loser pay supper Thursday as the losing finance drive contest team paid for the winning team's meal. The drive lasted 30 days with chamber directors split into two teams contacting local merchants for funds. Cash collected neared $1100 with about $700 in pledges to be received later for next year’s activities.
Mrs D L Pruitt of Indianapolis received word Monday evening of her mother Mrs Lucy Cassady's death at about o clock. Cassady was 82 and had lived in Indianapolis 45 years. She is survived by five daughters Florence Mellvain Pittsboro Beulah Binkley Sarasota Alice Wilhoite Plainfield Velma Pruitt Port Isabel Maudie Hopper Indianapolis, 10 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
The Shrimp Fiesta Boosters met Monday at the American Legion hall for a covered dish supper and costume party. Door prize went to Mrs Delaune of Brownsville, funniest costumes to Mrs Goette and Mrs Mias of Port Isabel. plans were announced for binge games with tickets from club members.
Word arrived of the death of Walter Liebmann a Port Isabel resident for 17 years known as Uncle Walt He was connected with the Ship cafe and Yacht hotel in Port Isabel He died at Corpus Christ Naval hospital and burial will be in El Reno Oklahoma Surviving are a brother and sister living in Pampa Texas
At a Port Isabel Lions Club meeting, Dorothy Grant received a certificate of service for promoting shipping to Port Isabel and serving as harbor master, reportedly the only woman harbor master in the United States navigation districts. Lions also planned a concession stand on the island.
Port Isabel reports completion of another Girl Scouts and Brownies day camp under Mrs. Stanley Thoroughman with photos in today’s Press. Upcoming camping trip for Troop 7 Boy Scouts to Rio Hondo is announced, plus local updates on home construction, fishing reports, and a rattlesnake incident featuring Guy Carpenter and Ramiro Barrera.
Port Isabel residents and area citizens are invited to view the newly completed Educational Building at the Methodist Church. Refreshments will be served at 7:30 pm Thursday evening.
Steve Martin made a personal visit to the ranch home of his grandmother Mrs. F. J. Martin in Tilden Texas. He spent time with family and toured the property during a brief stay.
The Los Fresnos Lions Club hosts a two night event at Sunset Park on June 17 and 18 at 730 PM featuring 100 entering horses including 25 from San Antonio. Proceeds aid Boys' Ranch Harlingen and other charities with special acts like the Rio Grande Valley Quadrille. Admission 75 cents adults 25 cents children.
Vidal Padilla Alvarado 23, jailed on aggravated assault with intent to rape after allegedly attacking Catalina Lopez 33 of Port Isabel near Breeza Del Mar bar. Alvarado, who claimed to be an alien, said he had been deported twice and waded back across the river. Several Woodman of the World officers were elected at a Port Isabel gathering, with visitors from Harlingen and Brownsville in attendance.

A new booster pump has been installed in Bayside and is now in operation to raise water pressure for Bayside and Laguna Vista. Officials say adjustments at the local water plant also increase pressure in the city area during peak afternoon and evening periods.
Wealthy South Texas developer John L. Tompkins is reshaping Padre Island’s southern tip with a multi million dollar project. He has pumped nearly 200000 yards of Laguna Madre silt onto low spots and plans up to a million yards, plus 20 miles of streets and soil stabilization. Water mains will begin within a month as the work progresses toward a transformed coastline near Port Isabel just north of the U S Mexico border.
Mrs. DonaldS Grant serves as harbormaster for the Fort Isave San Benito Navigation district, likely the only woman in the United States in such a role. Since January 1953 she has managed ship docking, berthing, and billing, coordinating with John Floyd and TW Dunn as needed, and she resides in Port Isabel.
Bay or Surf fishing reports list numerous anglers from Houston Dallas and Mercedes with counts of trout redfish jewfish and other catches. Notable entries include Captain Roy 5S Liles of San Antonio with a 62 pound jewfish and Jack Porter Mercedes with Eugene Eubenks Santa Rosa two jewfish 350 and 60 pounds respectively.
