Fred Petch Named Port Isabel Mayor to Complete Term
At a special Port Isabel City Commission meeting Fred Petch was appointed mayor to fill the unexpired term of Doug Christensen who resigned to take a civil service job. Petch will take the oath Saturday at 10 am and had previously served as a city commissioner. Christensen cited pleasure in serving and offered assistance to the successor. Township commissioners remaining are T. B. Mock and Nayo Perez.

Bridge of Honor Held for Ship 56
Ship 56 of Port Isabel Sea Scouts held a Bridge of Honor at the elementary school auditorium. Joe Ben Hunsaker, district scout executive, presented the charter for the new year to Robert Garcia of the sponsoring VFW post. New membership cards were issued, and Bobby Williams was welcomed into the ship company by the skipper. Tom Kennedy earned five merit badges and a Life badge. VFW ladies served coffee and cake after the ceremony, with welcome from Mrs. Stockaday and a Girl Scouts representation.

Three Teens Hurt In Mishap Near Laguna Vista
Three Port Isabel teenagers were injured Tuesday afternoon when a car driven by Gilbert Groomer had a blowout just west of Laguna Vista on Farm Road 510. Injured were Eleanor Goolsby with a lacerated scalp and possible back injuries, Pat Malcam with a broken collarbone, and Duane Simpson with a lacerated scalp. Other passengers included Gloria Dixon Susie Strain Alan DeRick and Carol Shoemaker. The group was en route to Harlingen when the accident occurred. They were taken to the Hockaday clinic in Port Isabel where they were treated and released.

Mrs. Lee A. Smith reports the Community Christmas fund is healthy with $75 raised at the High School Christmas Festival, $134 from a Firemen's Auxiliary bingo, and $50 donated by the Port Lions club. Santa arrives at 4 pm for the kiddies party, and food boxes will be delivered to needy families. Ped Hunt chairs the committee with Boy Scouts, Sea Scouts, Mariners, and Girl Scouts delivering and repairing toys for donation.
