La Feria Cage Tournament Opens January 5

Eighteen teams from Rio Hondo Lyford Los Fresnos Port Isabel La Joya Santa Rosa San Perlita and Sharyland accepted invitations for the 24th annual La Feria Lettermen's Club basketball tournament set to begin January 5 in the new La Feria gymnasium. First games are scheduled to start Thursday per tournament directors.

Local C of C Will Meet Thursday Nite

The Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce will meet Thursday evening at the high school library. A ballot of prospective board members will be presented for mailing to the local members for the annual director election. New directors will elect officers at the meeting and the annual banquet will follow.

Amusement Park To Cost 130000 On Padre Island

Contracts for a 130000 amusement park to be built at Isla Blanca Park on Padre Island were announced. Padre Island Amusement Enterprises Inc and Cameron County Park Board signed a 15 year lease for Fun-O Rama to open May 30 with nine rides including a train, ferris wheel, kiddie rides and a roller coaster. Construction starts immediately with operation beginning in April.

Ura Breedlove president of Los Fresnos State Bank says the bank had a profitable year. It paid a 15 percent dividend to stockholders of record and presented a one month salary bonus to all employees.

Christmas Fund Reports 25 Food Baskets Are Sent To Needy Families

Christmas Fund Committee reports 25 families received food baskets for Christmas. Recipients included Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Hill Mrs. Lucy Landers and daughter and Mrs. Lee A. Smith. Deliveries were by Gene Goolsby George Fingar Pat Ojeda and M Galvan. Toys were provided by scouts and delivered by Mrs. Smith. Roger Malan won best decorated home prize on Musina Street near the Methodist church. Honorable mentions went to Joe Mercurio Fred Petch Leo Baumfelder and Jake Reeves. About one thousand sacks of candy were distributed at the Kiddies Christmas party at Firemen's Hall. Ped Hunt, committee chair, thanked supporters and urged bigger plans for next year and more city decorations.

Viv Johnson and L. M. Bee of Hutchinson Kansas landed 60 trout and 17 sheephead over two days. Henry Weckrely of Washington Kansas caught 21 trout. A Plainview Texas group led by Red Schiddy Ed Wilkins Travis Dunn F A Ray and Eustace White reeled 40 sheephead and 41 trout. Gulf fishing noted on the Texas Joy with Frank Roberts guiding a Sebastian party. Lizzie Bee II with Tom Atkins guiding another group reported 275 pounds total.

Jetty fishing party reports catches from open water

On Tuesday December 27 ocean anglers from several towns reported trout and redfish catches. E. M. Camp and San Benito party netted 29 trout, Louis Summers of Brownsville 11, F H Rawlins Ardmore 21 trout and two redfish, Vic Johnson and L M Beebe of Hutchinson 25 trout. Report from boat At Lantic with guide Adley Armstrong and crew listing several Plainview members aboard with a haul of 600 pounds of fish.
