Water Deaths Have Variety of Causes
AUSTIN Texas Parks and Wildlife Department reports 1977 water fatalities were largely male under 21 and preventable. 83 percent were men, 51 percent under 21, 115 in 16 20 age group. Life jacket use reduced deaths for under 12. Most deaths occurred on lakes followed by rivers pools and tanks. Drinking drugs and lack of safety gear contributed. Swimming and boating were leading activities. 23 died saving others and water sports caused 25 deaths.
